This package contains Python 2.6.6 for the Synology NAS. It is the same version of Python than in the previous package, with the large file support properly built. It also add a few new packages like the Python Imaging Library, PycURL and PyCrypto. These packages are for pyLoad, which will be published as soon as I fix some installation issue I currently have.

Python 2.6.6 3 is available here. You are strongly invited to upgrade, as it might fix some potential issues with big files (more than 4GB, like most movies are).

It does not provide any user service by itself (it can’t be run, starting it from the DSM console will always report an error), but is needed by the latest version of my spk for SABnzbd, CouchPotato and SickBeard.

The installation process is straight forward, install it and that’s all! It will provide the python executable and libraries for other spk. If your are upgrading from an earlier version of this spk, you shall stop all spk that uses this package (like SAB, SB , and CP), do the upgrade of Python, and then restart the applications.

The package is about 13MB, and the install size 33MB. It supports all the NAS from the x07 to x11 series, except for the DS3611sx. Tested successfully on a DS408 (ppc854x) and a 210j (88f6281) with DSM 3.2 1922. Not tested with DSM 3.1 or older, but it should work.

Build with
Cheetah 2.4.4 src, cURL 7.21.3 src, jpegsrc v8 src, openssl 1.0.0c src, PyCrypto 2.3 src, PycURL 7.19.0 src, pyOpenSSL 0.11 src, Python 2.6.6 src with a patch to ease the cross compilation src, Python Imaging Library 1.1.7 src, sqlite 3.7.4 src, yenc 0.3 src, and zlib 1.2.5 src. No changes were made to the source code, only usual build configuration. Specific scripts to the Synology DSM were also added.

HI Zebulon,

Could you please include the DS3611xs support?
it should be fairly easy, it reports the cpu as being a bromolow, but fully supports x86, which should only require a quick script change.
I am more then willing to have you test the script on my DS3611xs.

there are more and more Synology units coming based on the bromolow CPU, so I think there might be more requests for this..

I can confirm large file support is working.
I added a line to the postProcessor.py of sickboard to log the filesizes.
With 2.6.6.2: File … is 2089077885 bytes, … is -1951293935 bytes
With 2.6.6.3: File … is 2067644140L bytes, … is 2344074435L bytes

Looks like Couch Potato works again now too with large files.

Also I tried it on one of my RS810+ units for grins and everything also works fine with DSM 3.2, which I just installed on that unit. I’ll try it on my DS1010+ later tonight.

What was the problem with large file support before? I never noticed an issue, and have downloaded quite a few large files via the SAB / SB packages.

@Diaoul: Do you think the encoding issues reside on the Python side? Python < 3.x is not very clean with the strings, but I can’t see what can be done here. If you have any proposition, please let me know. Yes, I should have taken the time to upgrade the libraries, shame on me…

@Ryan: Some peoples where reporting issues during the post processing, moving files around was not always successful, especially with CP, which bases the quality on the file size. If you didn’t encountered any problem, lucky you!

The Couchpotato issue involved an update on CP’s side too; the author changed/removed a workaround to fix another problem. If you hadn’t updated CP recently you probably didn’t see this issue.

@zebulon: Yes it is a misconfiguration of Python for embedded that causes a lot of encoding issues (SickBeard, CouchPotato, etc.). Python can’t deal with unicode strings properly when using os.* functions. I fixed it.
The fix will be in syno-packager https://github.com/Diaoul/syno-packager soon as I haven’t commited those changes yet. Stay tuned

With the brand new Package Center, maybe that could be great to unify our work somehow…

@Diaoul: Does-it mean that the foreign accent issue under SABnzbd should be resolved?? =)
I though the issue was coming from unrar not handling properly the foreign accents. At the moment, it is a bit painful to manually rename the files under a telnet session.
Could you confirm? Or, are you talking about an another problem?
I hope, I understand well, because French archives under UseNet are often including many accents.

Zebulon, Great Work!. Just one question. Could you please make a new Couchpotato package? Around august 16th the creator op CP created an update that isn’t being picked up bij de older CP versions and you need to update it manually to get (git pull or copy files). However Git pull doesn’t work (for me) and copying all files also doesn’t

Just upgraded from the beta to the release 3.2, and upgraded Python to this package — thanks for the great work on these!

Everything seems to be working, with the exception of image handling (thumbnails, etc.) in SickBeard. All images error out; attempting to load the image url results in this error:

File “/usr/local/python26/lib/python2.6/site-packages/PIL/Image.py”, line 37, in __getattr__
raise ImportError(“The _imaging C module is not installed”)
ImportError: The _imaging C module is not installed

Is anyone else receiving this, or should I try uninstalling and reinstalling the Python package?

@Chuck is right, looks like 2.6.6.3 broke images in Sickbeard due to the missing imaging module.
