Transmission 2.21 spk

Transmission 2.21 was release a few hours ago. It should fix the download issue reported by many of you on the 2.20 spk. It is now ready to be loaded in your favorite NAS. It can be downloaded here. See the official change log for what’s new in this beta.

The integration with DSM 3.x is better now, only one icon is created, and if dragged on the DSM desktop, its size will adapt properly.

The package is about 5.2MB, and the install size less than 7MB. The smaller size is due to the use of xz compression for the package, and that only the binaries for the underlying architecture are uncompressed and actually installed on the NAS. It supports all the NAS from the x07 to x11 series. Tested successfully on a DS408 (ppc854x) and a 210j (88f6281).

Build with transmission 2.21, openssl 1.0.0c, libevent 2.0.10, curl 7.21.3 and zlib 1.2.5. No changes were made to the source code, only usual build configuration. Specific scripts to the Synology DSM were also added.

The crashes I had in mi DS109+ with 2.20 vanished with 2.21 so it was a bug.

DS 410j, DSM 2.3 after update from 2.20b3 Transmission unable to start. Service always in status “stopped”.
Already tried rollback to 2.13 – ok, than again update to 2.20b4/2.21 – service unable to start.
So last working version for me is 2.20b3…
What can be the problem?

Guys, if I had one of the previous versions installed:
1) Do I need to uninstall it first or not before installing this version?
2) Will the torrents setup to seed/leach in the previous version be preserved or would they need to be setup again?

I am sorry but I did not these covered in he brief manual referred to in the post.

@Alex, no you don’t have to uninstall, you can use the upgrade function.
Torrents will be preserved, no problem.

I got something strange with this version. After some time my Up- and Down speed isn’t shown anymore, while i am still seeding or downloading. For instance, i can see my download percentage progress, but without the download speed shown. Both in the webui and with transmission-dot-net client, everything is 0 KB/sec.
Anyone else seen this behavior?

I have a torrent of about 120GB total size that seems to hang transmission on my DS1010+. Once transmission hangs:
1) It cannot be stopped from Package Management. It stays in ‘running’ state.
2) Synology server cannot be shutdown or restarted via DSM web-interface.

After the forced switch off by holding switch off button on the server disk parity check starts what takes ages.

Why can transmission not complete the loading and hangs? It did not happen on smaller torrents but I do not have enough stats to conclude it has to do with torrent size.
Is there anyway to shutdown/restart synology server in such situation without cutting the power?

Alex, you could try connecting via telnet/ssh and manually killing the transmission process and then restarting it via the web interface.

I’m having the same issue as Dario. My torrents continue to run but the transfer rates show zero, even though the amount and percent downloaded continues to change. I believe if I restart transmission it will show the rates again, but eventually they go back to zero.

I’ve tested this in different browsers and it is consistently a problem.

In fact, I have the same issue than Dario :

I use Transmission Remote GUI and transmission running for about 24 hours now still shows the download and upload speeds correctly as far as I can judge. It does NOT go to 0KB/s as some report. Admitedly I am using different UI.

My only trouble is that I have some torrents (I got one such now and had one before) that seem to hang transmission but that was also a problem with v2.13 that I had before.

On the second non-stop day of running the download/upload speeds shot up to 2-3 times higher than my ISP line. So there is an issue in the way these speeds are calculated but it constitutes itself differently for us – for some it gets to zero, for me it shots up high.

doing more testing, getting also strange speed data, 1.22MB/s right now when my line only goes up to 1MB/s.

also, it’s not following the upload speed limit, uploading at full line capacity when the limit is set to 40KB/s.

rolling back to 2.13, 2.2x builds are clearly bugged.

Concerning the speed limit issue, for what I can observe, it seems to be a display bug. I did some testing on my DS408 (ppc854x) and my DS210j (arm 88f6281). On the DS408, the displayed upload speed matches the limit, and is observed through the DSM resource monitor. On the DS210j, the value displayed is way higher (2.5 time for me) than the limit, but the limit is respected, as observed on the DSM resource monitor. I didn’t check the download speed though. More to come, but it might be a build issue.

Great! Finally my D211+ with a proper bittorrent downloader! Just installed and seems to work like a charm. Huge improvement in downloading speed compared to the download station.

I also rolled back to 2.13. Have the same problem as everyone else (no up and downspeed shown). I also have a DS410.

I might add that transmisson-remote-gui [sic] does not show the correct upload/download speeds either, so the RPC is giving it the wrong information.

1) Many above think that 2.21 is slower than 2.13. This is not the case. 2.21 IS AS FAST AS 2.13.
2) Setting the speed limits also works correctly.
3) It is just that the speeds are not shown correctly. It is nothing but display issues.

These facts are easily verifiable via resource monitoring.

Hello. Just istalled Transmision 2.21 on Synology 109j, and run service. I se icon “Transmission” on panel, but when i press on it … opening webpage … wating … wating and see the error 10060: time-out on the web page like MYNAS:9091 ((((

If anyone here can shed some light on one long standing issue I have been having regarding download/upload limits – by default these seem to be set to 50KiB/s down and 5KiB/s up. I want to increase these but when I do so through the preferences it doesn’t stick. It works but then after a while I’ll go back and it’ll be back to 50/5. I have also tried stopping the daemon and manually editing the config file but have the same problem, after a while it always goes back to 50/5.

Any ideas?

I upgraded to 2.21 from 2.13 but had to downgrade again as 2.21 seems to be constantly using the internet for something even though all the torrents are paused.

I’m seeing the same 0kb problem as many others. Tried to downgrade to 2.13, but my torrents wouldn’t restart… so I’m stuck with 2.21 until a new version with fix comes out. Not the end of the world, but a bit annoying.

unpacking on a DS209+ II does not work. The xz part is not extracted leaving the system without a transmission-daemon and other files.

@madmax: strange, the package shall be self contained, it’s the goal I give myself: don’t depend on anything. The file package.tgz contains xzdec for the supported platforms. I will have a look tomorrow to ensure that I hadn’t miss something obvious. Keep you informed.

@all with speed issues: There is a ticket opened for the speed issue on transmission’s trac: https://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/4030. As Alex and myself explained, it is only a speed issue. I’ll keep you informed on this.

It works fine, the only thing that I miss in transmission server is the option to specify download directory per torrent. It can be done via transdroid, but it would be cool to have the same option via web gui. I need to find some java guru to patch that

@Nash: The feature is currently implemented in Transmission for OS X only, it needs to be implemented in transmisison-daemon before it can be available for our NAS. See https://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/2175.

@jl: Transmission is written in C, and the web gui in html/JavaScript. No need of a Java guru for that, but rather an html/JavaScript master!

jl, you can simply use Transmission Remote GUI or anything similar – it allows to set the folder for each torrent separately. It also allows to move torrents.

Upgraded to v2.21 and unable to start the package from the DSM 2.3
Uninstalled the package and fresh install of v2.21, same problem.
fresh install of v2.20b4, which was working before, has the same problem now. Unable to start the package.
