After a few comments, a made a new build of Midnight Commander 4.7.5, this time including the fix to ensure that the x07 ARM based NAS can do ftp. It should make no difference for others. It can be downloaded here.

The package is about 11MB, and the install size around 26MB. There is no integration with DSM, as it is purely a command line tool. You will get an error if you try to run this package from the DSM interface, but this is normal. You will need to connect to your NAS through ssh or telnet to use it. Make sure your terminal is in UTF-8 mode or you’ll get some strange characters on screen. Also, the mouse is supported, at least with putty on Windows. It shall support all the NAS from the x07 to x11 series. Tested successfully on a DS408 (ppc854x) and a 210j (88f6281).

Build with midnight commander 4.7.5, with patch 2282 and proposed fix for 2401, glib 2.26.1, slang 2.2.3, ncurses terminfo db from ubuntu, file 5.05, xz 5.0.0, bzip2 1.0.6, and zlib 1.2.5. No changes were made to the source code, only usual build configuration. Specific scripts to the Synology DSM were also added.

@a64: This is normal, as explained, this package is not intended to run in the background, but called through the shell (using ssh or telnet to connect to the NAS. If you don’t know shat ssh or telnet are, you don0t need this package.

Now I try to make shellinabox work along with mc. I have some authentication issue now.

Hi,

First, thanks for all your packages ! It’s awesome and so usefull !

But, (There is always a “but”) when I’m connect to MC, I’ve got this :

“Cannot create /root/.mc directory”

and, when quit :

“Cannot save file /root/.mc/ini:
Failed to create file ‘/root/.mc/ini.GTBPVV’: No such file or directory”

you know why I have this?

So how do I start it then?
I am new to the whole command line linux / NAS thing. I only have basic knowledge of the Mac/Unix command line.

@dotromain: It seems you run mc without being root, but with the variable HOME set to /root, as it shall be for the root user. Check your environment. By teh way, the two errors are linked, it can’t create /root/.mc, so it can write a file in that directory afterward.
@zankty: If you don't know how to use it, I guess you don't need it. mc is a very powerful command line utility, but you can seriously breaks things with it, especially if you run it under root.

I know what it is that’s why I downloaded it. It just that my only Terminal experience is from DOS and playing around in Mac OS. I have always been a big fan of the Norton Commander interface style.

Never mind though after 2 days I finally figured it out .

All I had to do is type “mc” anywhere in the ssh session. That was just to easy to figure out .

I have installed most of your packages on a 1511+, and all of them seems to work nicely. expect….

When I try to edit a file with mc, it will just write punctuation “.”, no matter what key I press?

And again issues with new DSM3.2. mc working, but looks a little funny – pseudographic lines shown in some weird characters, and it have an isssue with correct show of almost everything – looks really weird. it usable, but…

This release works fine with DSM3.2-1944 on my DS411j connecting via ssh (putty with remote charset utf-8). Thanks a lot.
By the way editing a textfile with F4 every newly inserted character is displayed as a simple dot, even in the textfile after the saving. Any suggestion/workarounds? mcedit is not available.

With MC i have a problem he is not saving the changes if i exit the program any input on that?

Is it possible to make a new build based on the latest version?

I got the problem with both 4.7.5 and 4.7.5-sp1 on my DS211+ with editing files: I only get dots in stead of characters. On renaming etc I can enter characters fine, but not on editing (F4).

Found part of the edit ‘dots’ solutionL The problem of the dots in edit can be (until a later build is compiled) fixed by changing the file type in the option menu (display options) to UTF8.
This is a know issue in the current build used.

Unfortunatelly it doesn´t works on the DS-1512+.
It ends with the message “Your architecture is not supported”.
Can you please adapt Your great package to this architecture ?
DS-1512+ has an Intel Atom D2700 Dualcore (2C/4T) 2.13GHz x86 Processor
